Celebrating Pentecost

Pastor Jones explains the church holiday called Pentecost

On the day called Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended on the gathered disciples, not in the form of a dove as had happened with Jesus, but with wind and flames (Acts 2:2-4). This event is often described as the birthday of the church. Peter preached the first sermon on Pentecost morning and 3000 people became followers of Christ. Each year the church celebrates Pentecost on the seventh Sunday after Easter.

What does the Holy Spirit do in our lives?

As we celebrate the holiday of Pentecost each year, it is vital to think about the continuing role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Holy Spirit’s work today is to continue to bring people to Jesus, to explain his teachings to them, to urge them to become followers of Jesus for themselves, and then to help them live Christ-like lives filled with love, joy and peace (Titus 3:5, 6; Gal 5:22, 23).   The Holy Spirit is the agent of God’s work in us. No wonder Pentecost is such an important holiday of the church.

So very thankful for the Holy Spirit’s witness in my life that I’m a Child of God and for enabling me to love God and love people. It’s wonderful to be part of the Family of God; His Church! Presently, as protests have turned to terror and destruction in our country, Jesus, serves as an anchor for our souls, giving His children peace and presence midst the storms of life. All praise and glory to God for so great a salvation!

Thanks, Jan, for your personal affirmation of the Holy Spirit’s work. In these days, we are certainly thankful to be able to look to God for assurance, perspective and strength. And we ask the Holy Spirit to guide us in our responses to the things happening in our times.
