More Helpful Hints for Influential and Energetic Living

Many people assume that life is supposed to be easy. But Jesus taught that “In this world, you will have trouble” (John 16:33). So it is wiser to assume as M. Scott Peck put it that “Life is Difficult” (The Road Less Traveled). But we are not to be discouraged by this because Jesus continued, “Take heart, I have overcome the world!” The Apostle Peter caught Jesus’ idea and encouraged those to whom he wrote to stand “firm in the faith” (1 Peter 5:9 NIV).

This week Pastor Kelvin explored four hints that Peter gives us as to how we can stand firm in our faith despite difficult times. First, we need to humbly depend upon God’s strength rather than our own. God hates human arrogance but listens to those who humbly seek him. Sometimes we might fail to stand up for our faith because we are afraid or anxious. But Peter strengthens our motivation by reminding us that God cares for us so we can cast our cares upon God through prayer. With our burden lightened, we are able to live more powerfully. But Peter reminds us that we have a spiritual enemy who actively preys upon our soul. How can we overcome? Peter admonishes us to “resist him” by staying alert for his attacks. Finally, Peter encourages us repeatedly to stand firm (1 Peter 5:9,10,12). God will help us. He is building into our lives with strength so that we can have a powerful spiritual influence.
