God’s work needs everyone working together

The weather was cold, but hearts were warm at Copper Hill as we learned a new worship song, “Who You Say I Am.” Pastor Kelvin’s message called “Partnership in the Gospel” picked up on Paul’s similar theme as he wrote to the Philippian church. Rev. Jones encouraged us by noting ways in which we already work together and how with God’s help we have worked together and contributed finances to bring our church through COVID. He pointed out that all laypersons are meant to share in ministry to others according to their abilities. This includes teaching, leading in prayer, Bible study leaders, and witnessing to God’s grace. Laypersons are not confined to traditional supportive behind-the-scenes roles though those are also essential.
The result of this happy partnership in the gospel is joy in the heart of the leader and confidence in God’s continuing work in the congregation together. Pastor Jones pointed out that the original context of Phil. 1:6 “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” is collective rather than individual. We may apply it to individuals, but we should also apply it to local churches. God is seeking to bring to completion the work he has begun in local churches!
Paul concludes the opening section of his letter with a prayer as he often did. It is a great example prayer for us to pray for others in our church family. He prays:
- That their love would abound more and more
- That they would have knowledge, insight and discernment
- That they might know what is best
- That they might lead pure and blameless lives
- That there would be much “fruit of righteousness” from their lives
- That they would always give glory and honor to God
What a great prayer request list for others that we love both at home and in our church family. Let’s pray for pastors and church leaders especially with this list.
I’ve always claimed Phil. 1:6 as one of my favorites because it reinforces my security in Christ as the Cross Bearer of all my sin. What he started, He will complete! Though spoken to the Philippian believers, thanks for mentioning that it can apply to individuals as well. Some advise not to claim promises that were not meant for you, but I’ve always claimed this one for myself and I can’t let it go! It’s the bedrock of of my faith and sanctification.
