Cousin Parker introduces Luke Oliver to Hanging of the Greens

One of the high points of the year at Copper Hill is the annual “Hanging of the Greens” service. Click on the following title for an explanation of what Hanging of the Greens is. At our church, it is also a service for teens and children to take charge. Pastor Kelvin welcomes the congregation at the beginning, leads in the pastoral prayer in the middle and gives the benediction at the end. All the rest of the service is up to the children and teens and what a great job they did! Griffin Mandirola and Anna Griffin served as leaders on the platform as a total of eleven teens and children helped in various ways. Many of them took turns in narrating and in bringing in the greens, the bells, and the ceramic manger scene. Parker Mandirola lit the Advent wreath and also helped his cousin Jake “learn the ropes.” The youngest participant was Luke Oliver who was carried in by Mom or Dad. Sheri Mandirola coordinated the service.

The highlight of the service was the video Christmas message prepared by the teens. Malia Gabbidon did a great deal to make this happen, serving both as photographer and as video editor. JoAnne Jones served as Director and Project Coordinator. Several adults also were interviewed as part of the the video as they answered two simple questions. “What are you looking forward to about Christmas?” and “What does Christmas mean to you.” The video is in two parts. The first showcases the great answers that were received from both teens and adults. The second records a narrated and costumed manger scene shot in one of the Oxen Hill Farms’ older barns.
