The Power of Together

The Power of Together

Stronger together applies to spiritual life too.

Continuing in the series “Steppingstones to Spiritual Health,” Pastor Kelvin reminded us that spiritual growth happens better when we are functioning in community in the family of God. Basing his message on Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 18:15-50, Rev. Jones suggested three ways that the church is essential to our spiritual growth.

First, the mutual accountability created by shared expectations for attitude and behavior encourage us on the right paths. In the church, feeling responsible to one another is about subtle spiritual traits like humility, generosity, compassion and kind words.

Second, we encourage one another in various ways. As the book of Hebrews says,

Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV

Third, pastor reminded us again that Jesus gave two special promises to united prayer.

Truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.

Matthew 18:19-20 NIV

Jesus promises to be with us in a special way and he promises to answer to our prayer. There are only two conditions given here to receive these promises. First, we need to be gathered together. It couldn’t be more obvious that Jesus is helping us to understand the power of togetherness in the body of Christ. Second, as we gather for prayer, we need to be in harmony in heart and mind as we pray together.

Connection Groups here at Copper Hill Church are designed to help us receive the benefits of meeting together in the body of Christ. They are a time when we can encourage each other, pray for each other, and learn from God’s Word together.  Connection groups can happen in several ways: a brunch crew, a hobby club, or a Bible study.  Spouses who share God’s Word and pray at home form a powerful spiritual connection too.  We encourage everyone to get connected!
